Linear Review
For the first time in
history, Bandai America makes a Power Rangers helmet, and a pretty good one at
that. First the sheer coloring of the helmet is awesome, done in very cool
almost metallic looking Red. I was looking forward to this item, and I can
say that I am not disappointed.
Okay, to start with, the helmet comes in two pieces, the front half and the back half. It is relatively easy to assemble. The first "Mission" is all ready loaded onto the helmet, so you're ready to go as soon as you get the size adjuster set. The helmet will fit kids heads fine, adult heads are more iffy. It will fit on my head, but the front bottom of the helmet goes to about the start of my chin. There is padding in the helmet, so you're not having that hard plastic sitting and rubbing on your head. The visor is just like I imagine a real Ranger helmet would be and you can see of out it fine.
There are three volume settings for the helmet, this way kids don't blow out their eardrums with the voices of the missions. The downloading process is simple enough. Go to www.bandai.com/powerrangers, click on the Mission Response Helmet to the right, click on application, download the software and follow the instructions through the setup.
There are a total of 23 Missions that can be placed on the helmet, that includes the one it comes with. The missions are divided into six categories. After you complete all the mission in a category, you'll be able to print out a completion certificate. Downloading a Mission to the helmet takes about 5 minutes. Note, those with Dialup Connections, the download time will be longer. Once downloaded on the helmet, the mission can be activated by pressing Button #2.
The Missions themselves have the voices of people trying to sound like Mr. Hartford, Will, Dax, Moltor & Flurious. In the mission you train for Ranger Battle, you go out in search of the jewels, you battle evil forces, etc. . . This is all done through narration, so you have to have an imagination to see these mission in front of you, instead of just the room you are in. A good point for Bandai America is that some missions actually to have you retrieving some of the artifacts that have been used in Operation Overdrive.
The helmet has a general sound effects and phrases button, being Button #1. Here are the sounds of that button:
--"Attention
All Rangers"
--"Your Help Is Needed"
--"Download Your Mission"
--"Overdrive Red Ranger Accelerate&quuot;
--"Power Ranger Full Power"
--Sword Clash Sound
--Laser Blast Sound
--Power Up and Fire Sound
As the Missions play through, or as the sounds occur with the press of Button #1, the lights on the helmet light up. Accessories that come with Operation Overdrive weapons can be attached to the side of the helmet, though they don't activate any new lights or sounds.
Overall, I'm really pleased with this toy. I think that kids will love being able to wear an "almost" real Ranger Helmet and train & act out Power Rangers Missions with it. With all 23 missions, it's sure to stir a child's imagination and give them hours of fun. The software is very user friendly. Collectors I think might like the helmet for a display piece. Granted it is not the exact Red Ranger helmet, but it is close and still looks cool. For some adults I know it would be fun just to wear the helmet around friends or family and tease & have some fun with them. The mission for adults, yeah not that great for adults. Me personally, I enjoyed listening to the mission, all be them short, but I give Bandai America points on originality and using items from the show itself. Again, I think kids will have loads of fun with the helmet and adult collectors will probably enjoy it as a nice display piece or something to have some fun with.
