Linear Review
The Bandai America
release of the Mercury Morpher, and again they do a pretty good job. Even
though this Morpher is not an exact duplicate in size & shape to it's
Japanese counterpart, it's still really cool. Now to the review.
The Mercury Morpher comes in the normal Clamshell packaging. Once you get it out of the plastic, and attach the yellow plastic wristband you're almost ready to go. The morpher is set in "Try Me" mode in the package, so switching it to On is needed.
The Clear Morpher Top is nicely done and has the Operation Overdrive emblem on it. To open the Top, press the blue button near on the right bottom corner. This button is more of a click style, meaning that once the button clicks as far as it will go, the top will flip open.
Now let's cover the Morph Button. The button itself is smaller than the Gou Gou Changers, but still looks all right. When you press the button, it too has more of a click style to it. Once pressed, the Morph Sounds activate, and the Black Light feature on the right side is activated. The Dial around the Morph button is painted Yellow Gold. When you turn the Dial, you can only turn it a quarter turn, then release it and it goes back in place.
To the Command Screen & Buttons. There are three different buttons to choose from. First is the Decoder Button, then the Vehicle Button and finally the Megazord Button.
With the Decoder Button, once pressed the morpher voice says, "Decoder Ready" and the Black Light comes on.
The Vehicles Button is used for calling the Rescue Runner Zords. When you press the Vehicles Button, the voice says "Vehicles Ready". Then the Zord Changing Sound activates. This is where the Dial comes into play. Turn the Dial once and you'll choose the Fire Truck, twice for the Ambulance and three times for the Police Car. As a Zord is selected, it will light up red on the Command Screen. Only one Zord can be selected at a time. Once a Zord is selected, press the Morph Button and you'll hear either Fire Truck, Ambulance or Police Car sirens.
Finally we have the Megazord button. Once this button is pressed, the charging sounds begins again. Use the Dial again to select the Zords from the Command Screen. This time you have to select all three Zords, so this means three turns of the Dial. After all three Rescue Runners are selected and lit up on the Command Screen, press the Morph Button. The new Flash Point Megazord Formation sound occurs.
Overall, Mercury Morpher is a really great Morpher, in my opinion. I know some collectors will point out that it is not what Tyzonn uses on Operation Overdrive, and they are right. However, one small issue I always had with the Gou Gou Changer is, while it looks totally cool, it lacked some playability. The Mercury Morpher has a good deal more playability. The addition of the Black Light is a great feature, even if it is not used on the show. I love the redesigned shape of the Morpher, it feels more balanced with the batteries not being in the back compartment. The new Command Screen is a neat feature. Though all the sounds on Morpher could have been just a bit louder. I think Kids will love this toy and get a kick out of all its features. Collectors will probably like it too, though if you're a die hard collector wanting exactly what is used on the show, then yes go ahead and get the Gou Gou Changer; if you can find it. So overall, I give it an excellent for kids and a really good for collectors.
